RE: SUV Extinction

My Excursion has never been a daily driver unless another vehicle is out of commission..
It primarily is used for towing/vacation, hauling the entire family (6 people) to places we go together, and when the NW Ohio weather is snowy...
My wife and I each have cars as everyday drivers..
BTW...you can't beat the Excursion for comfortable 3rd row seating, and also space behind for whatever...

RE: What is your current TV?

2002 Ford Excursion Limited
4x4
7.3L PowerStroke Diesel
Love the Quad seating and far rear bench.
IMHO the ultimate "people mover (in comfort)/tow vehicle".

RE: Camgrounds in Western Michigan along Lake Michigan

Thanks for the responses guys..
BTW...when I mean "lakefront" I meant the campground...not necessarily the campsite.
Where we camp at Mill Creek is not actually on the lakefront...it sits back off the lake.

RE: Cost of ownership 7.3 vs 6.0, What's your opinion?

I can only report what I know. I have never owned the 6.0.
I have a '02 X with the 7.3 PSD.
It has about 78,000 miles on it. The only thing I've ever done to it engine-wise is replace an injector...which wasn't cheap.
It's been dependable....I've never had any issues while towing. It has loads of power... I tow a 34' TT that weights approximately 9,000+ lbs. when loaded. It's always pulled like a champ.
I'm not going to downgrade the 6.0. I will say that a while ago I toyed with the idea of getting a 5th Wheel. I was going to trade off the X for the F250/350 because I love Ford Trucks. However...I just couldn't get past all the remarks here and elsewhere about the "shakiness" of the 6.0s initially...and that's coming from a Ford Lover..
I own..
1994 Ford Taurus SHO
1998 Ford Taurus SHO
2006 Ford Taurus
1997 Ford Mustang Cobra :B
2002 Ford Excursion 4x4 7.3L PSD
Even with my love of Ford I just couldn't pull the trigger...and now I've just decided to keep the X (which was a very smart decision).

RE: New (used) Tow vehicle

Nice truck!!
I love my 7.3 PSD Excursion!!
The 4x4 comes in handy too. This past March my wife and I took our 16th Anniversary up near Port Clinton, Ohio...on Lake Erie. Well, as "luck" would have it NW Ohio experienced blizzard conditions that weekend. Snow was piled high and blowing everywhere....drifts 1/2 as high as the truck....
It was great...my wife and I drove around smashing drifts, just having fun...while only the 4x4's dared venture out..:B

Camgrounds in Western Michigan along Lake Michigan

OK...brief explanation for context.
Due to unavoidable forces, we must take our annual trip to Mackinaw Mill Creek camping much earlier than usual. Now, this time of the year that far north can be a bit "cool"..and according to Intellicast it's going to be that way early next week until the end of the week or so.
We're leaving Tuesday, June 17 and return Friday, June 27. This trip, as of right now, is to be spent entirely at Mill Creek. However, we are now considering finding a campgrounds in Western Michigan, maybe about 1/2 way up the side of the state...roughly...to visit for a few days.
However, we would like a campgrounds that is set up on Lake Michigan much like Mill Creek sits on Lake Huron...
So...does anybody have any suggestions?
Keep in mind that we're not looking for a "rustic campgrounds". We like the full hookup/30amp sites.
If anybody who has been to Mill Creek knows of a place similar...please chime in.
I know there are a number of experts on here that can name some places!! :B
Thanks!!

RE: Excursion brake rotor question

Thanks for all the info guys...sorry it took me so long to respond but a lightning strike near my house on Monday fried the Network Interface Card on my PC...leaving me without internet access until now.
In any event...after conversing with some other people...reading info here and on the Ford site..and then seeing what my brakes looked like once the mechanic (my local one, not the guy I referenced in my earlier post on this thread) removed the wheels...I decided to replace all 4 rotors and brake pads/hardware with factory parts from Ford.
BTW...I also found out that the front passenger side rotor was missing one of the two guide bolts holding the caliper on...which explains some things about what was happening, and some other some that was happening..
Needless to say...I'm not too happy with the mechanic I mentioned in my previous post...as he was the last one to work on it. It was MISSING...not sheared off. You could see where the caliper was actually rubbing on the inside of the rim!!:M
I'll report back to let you know how it worked when we return from our "big trip" into Michigan. (late June)

RE: Excursion brake rotor question

Thanks for the info guys..
Moore...
I hear ya' The only thing is...the gentleman I use to do the brake and suspension work on all vehicles I own is somebody with great expertise, and I trust him explicitly. He was the one clued me into this several years ago. What you said is interesting though..
One question....what "break in period" are you referring to? Is that for new rotors? Brake pads?
Do I have to put so many miles on these things before I can tow my trailer?

Excursion brake rotor question

OK, I know that when you need expertise the best place to go is to those who own the vehicles.
I have a 2002 Ford Excursion 7.3L PSD 4X4. It has the junk factory rotors that warp because they do not dissipate heat well enough. We tow a 34' Travel Trailer, which doesn't help.
Anyway, have dealt with this issue for years now, ready to just "break" down and buy the slotted/drilled rotors.
So...can anybody point me to a reputable place to get them? You put "slotted/drilled" rotors into Google and you get a ton of places that sell them...but that doesn't mean they're any good.
Appreciate anybody who can help me.
